Applicants must have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, be nominated by an Australian employer for a job in regional Australia, usually demonstrate at least 3 years of relevant work experience and a positive skills assessment (unless exempt), be usually under 45 years of age (with named exemptions for academics, scientific specialists, and certain subclass 444/461 holders), meet health, character and English requirements, and agree to remain employed with the nominating employer for at least 2 years.

Yes, the applicant needs an Australian employer nominating them to work in a position in regional Australia. The employer relationship is important because the visa is granted on the basis of that nomination, and the applicant is expected to work for the nominating employer in regional Australia for at least 2 years, with employment to begin within 6 months of entry or visa grant.

This visa is closed to new applications. It was for skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer for a position in regional Australia. The applicant must have an occupation on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations and, depending on the occupation, at least 3 years of relevant work experience and a skills assessment. Usually, the applicant must be under 45 years of age when applying, and must have at least Competent English.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Holders are expected to work for the nominating employer in regional Australia for at least 2 years. Family members (partner, dependent child or stepchild, a partner's dependent child or stepchild, and their dependent children) can be included in the application when applying or added before a decision is made. A subclass 457 or 482 visa holder already recognised as a family member can also be included. Family members applying with the main applicant must meet health and character requirements.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

This is a permanent visa allowing the holder to stay in Australia indefinitely from the day it is granted. From the date the visa is granted, holders can travel to and from Australia for up to 5 years; after that a Resident Return visa is needed to keep travelling as a permanent resident.
