Which nationalities and age range can participate?

Applicants must be randomly selected in the MATES ballot and hold a Notification of Selection letter, hold a valid Indian passport, be aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) on the date the ballot registration period opens, and have graduated within 2 years of that date with a Bachelor degree or higher from a Top 100 institution on the NIRF India Rankings Overall 2024 List in a specified industry (renewable energy, mining, engineering, ICT, artificial intelligence, financial technology, agricultural technology). They must also meet an English language test score threshold, health and character requirements, and apply from outside Australia.

What combination of travel, work, study or training does the programme permit?

The MATES stream allows Indian graduates and early career professionals to live and work in Australia for up to 2 years. Holders can do any kind of work and study, travel to and from Australia as many times as they want while the visa is valid, and bring members of their family unit to Australia temporarily.

What are the defining limitations: quota, ballot, previous participation, employer limits, study limits or equivalent?

Applicants must be randomly selected in the MATES ballot. Holders can live and work in Australia for the life of the visa without the same-employer or study-duration restrictions seen on the Working Holiday and Work and Holiday visas; the official page describes no work-hours or study limits for this stream. The visa cannot be extended and a holder is not eligible for a further Subclass 403 MATES stream visa.

What funds, insurance, onward travel or similar preparation is particularly important?

Applicants must have the financial capacity to support themselves and any members of the family unit who come with them while in Australia. This can be shown with evidence of an employment offer with an Australian business; without an employment offer, the applicant must show enough money to support themselves, usually about AUD5,000 for the initial stay. The applicant and family members applying with them must have adequate health insurance for the whole of the stay to be granted the visa, covering medically necessary treatment, including transport. The first entry to Australia must be on or before the date in the visa grant letter, which will be 12 months from the date of visa grant.

How long can the person stay, can the programme be extended or repeated, and what happens when it ends?

This is a temporary visa granting a stay of up to 2 years, starting on the day the holder first enters Australia. The visa cannot be extended, and the holder is not eligible for a further Subclass 403 MATES stream visa; a new visa application is required to stay longer in Australia.
