What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The applicant must hold a subclass 457, 482 or eligible bridging visa, have usually worked in eligible sponsored employment full-time for a total of 2 years in the 3 years before applying (in an occupation their 457/482 visa was granted for), and have a nomination from an Australian employer approved within the 6 months before applying.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes. The applicant must be nominated by the employer who last sponsored them to work full-time on their subclass 457 or 482 visa; the employer's business must be actively and lawfully operating in Australia, and the applicant must apply within 6 months of the nomination being approved. The visa cannot be granted if there is adverse information about the nominator or an associated person (unless it is reasonable to disregard it), if the nomination is withdrawn, or if the position is no longer available. The holder is expected to work for the nominating employer for at least 2 years and must begin that employment within 6 months of entry to Australia (if granted outside Australia) or of the grant date (if granted in Australia).

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The stream is for existing subclass 457, 482 or eligible bridging visa holders. The applicant must have been employed in eligible sponsored employment for a total of 2 years in the 3 years before applying, in an occupation for which a subclass 457 or 482 visa was granted, and must have the skills and qualifications needed for the nominated occupation. The applicant must usually be under 45 when applying, and must have at least competent English, with no exemption from the English requirement since 16 November 2019.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Holders can live, work and study in Australia indefinitely; they are expected to work for their nominating employer for at least 2 years. Family members can be included in the application when applying or added after applying but before a decision. Family members are the partner, a dependent child or stepchild, the partner's dependent child or stepchild, and the dependent child or stepchild of the applicant's or partner's dependent child or stepchild. A subclass 457 or 482 visa holder granted that visa as a member of the applicant's family can also be included, but must hold that visa and be included when the application is made. Family members who apply must meet health and character requirements.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

This is a permanent visa granting indefinite stay in Australia from the day it is granted (or, for applicants outside Australia, from the day they enter on the visa). Holders can travel to and from Australia for up to 5 years from grant; after that they need a Resident Return visa to keep travelling as a permanent resident.
