What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Holders can live, work and study in Australia indefinitely and are expected to work for their nominating employer for at least 2 years, beginning within 6 months of visa grant (onshore) or entry to Australia (offshore). Family members (partner, dependent child or stepchild, a partner's dependent child or stepchild, and their dependent children) can be included when applying or added before a decision; a subclass 457 or 482 visa holder already recognised as a family member can also be included.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

This is a permanent visa granting indefinite stay in Australia from the day it is granted (or, for applicants outside Australia, from the day they enter on the visa). Holders can travel to and from Australia for up to 5 years from grant; after that they need a Resident Return visa to keep travelling as a permanent resident. Holders may apply for citizenship if eligible.
